Testing brought to query with Girl Talk All Day

DJ Girl Talk has released his second record. “All Day” was made available totally free download. The DJ mix record uses almost 375 music samples. All together, they create a 71 minute piece of music. Lawful vs. illegal testing is a query often visited by the courts. Girl Talk “All Day” will likely raise these questions yet again. 'All Day' Girl Talk downloaded totally free

A second album was launched by DJ Girl Talk, or Greg Gillis. The first album was launched in 2008, and he has since been touring with more than 40 tour dates in a year. “All Day” is an album released as a totally free download on the Illegal Art website. "All Day" by Girl Talk is designed to be a long listening piece that is 71 minutes long although it’s split into 12 tracks. On the album, there are about 373 different samples or pieces of songs from the artists.

Trying 'All Day' legally

There are legal problems with testing the Girl Talk "All Day" record. It is allowed for music to be sampled with permission generally. The "fair use" of music trying has been something the courts have had to work with considering permission isn't always requested. Recently there was a decision made with Bridgeport Music Inc. v. Dimension Films. This decision said that a "distinctive" three note riff is enough if permission wasn't requested to be considered a violation.

'All Day' by Girl Talk and the way Creative Common permit does apply

Because of the all-or-nothing copyright option, another option has been taken by people. The Creative Commons permit has been used more and more. This is a “claim and release” system of copyrighting that allows artists to allow some kind of use of their work, with attribution, remixing and commercial use as they dictate. The Girl Talk “All Day” record is released under a Creative Commons non-commercial permit. This means that any person has permission to use the work, as long as it is not for commercial reasons. While Girl Talk might well benefit from the exposure this brings, there is a concern of whether all the artists included in the samples could be — or have to be — remunerated for their sampled work.
