Pancreatic cancer awareness month marks increases in early recognition

November is pancreatic cancer consciousness month. Pancreatic cancer does not occur as often as cancer of the breast, however patients have really little chance at survival. The disease that victim Patrick Swayze drew attention to last year upon his death was once believed to be fast and aggressive, however recent studies have shown that signals of its presence could be detected years in advance, which is critical for successful treatment.

Cancer of the breast Awareness Month review

According to American Cancer Society estimates, in 2009 there were 192,370 new cases of invasive breast cancer and 62,280 early-stage breast cancer diagnosed in women. 40,000 were said to end up in death of all those cases. Also, lots of med were diagnosed last year. 2,000 men were diagnosed. Death would be the result of many of those too. 440 were forecasted that way.

Myths about breast cancer

  • Underwire bras are bad. They make cancer of the breast more likely

Many believe toxins build up because there is constricted breast tissue with underwire bras which is wrong. The truth, Dr. Deborah Axelrod tells CBS, is that no such link exists.

  • Deodorant linked to breast cancer

This is also false, claims Dr. Schnabel. Toxins between deodorant and cancer of the breast isn't proven in studies.

  • Drink from plastic water bottles and get breast cancer

A link between plastic bottles and cancers is something numerous experts believe is there. Others doubt it just as much though. There hasn't been any connection between BPA (bisphenol) and cancer although the majority are concerned about its connection to cancer.

  • Mammograms cause breast cancer

Dr. Schnabel tells Columbia Broadcasting System News the amount of radiation (.1 to .2 rads per picture) released in a mammogram is equal to or less than what a woman’s breasts are exposed to naturally over a three-month period.

  • More of a risk with lumpy breasts

While lumpy breasts can make breast cancer detection somewhat more difficult, having lumpy breasts doesn’t resign a woman to breast cancer. Be cautious and treat newly found breast lumps. Dr. Axelrod suggests women be careful with this.

  • No breast cancer if there isn't a family history

While breast cancer can run within the family, studies indicate that 80 percent are sporadic cases.
