An anchor for the ESPN media network has been charged with plagiarism. Selva has admitted it was a “mistake”. Supposedly, Selva replicated and used a passage from the Orange County Register. He did not at any point credit the author, Ding. Just because creating content takes time and effort doesn’t always mean it is profitable. This is just the latest incident highlighting problems with content management online. Media content can cost enough to require a lot of people to take out an pay day loan just to purchase.
Plagiarism gets Selva on leave
Anchor of overnight program “Highlight Express,” Will Selva, talked about a game. It was the game with the LA Lakers v the San Antonio Spurs. The majority of that on-air spot was taken word-for-word from an Orange County Register column about the exact same game, written by Ding. While on the air, no credit for the content was issued by Selva. Wednesday he apologized. He said a “mistake” happened. Reportedly, Selva had copied the column over to his script while doing research and “forgot to rewrite it.”. In a statement, Will responded to the allegations by saying:
“I made a horrible mistake, and I’m deeply sorry. I sincerely apologize for my sloppiness, especially to Kevin Ding, viewers and colleagues.”
Never an opportunity for redemption from will Selva
Associations of plagiarism weren’t good for Will Selva. He got indefinitely on leave from ESPN. Accidental or not, plagiarism of content is proving to be a very sticky issue for several media outlets. Lately, “Cooks Source” magazine has been caught taking information from online sources. Almost all sources online would get information stolen. With 24-hour media networks and a constant online stream of content, plagiarism is both easier and more tempting than ever. Selva’s mistake can be addressed by ESPN with “appropriate action” being promised. The issue of whether or not there is enough online streaming protection needs to be considered as well. Many assume that plagiarism will never be fixed since online problems that like might never be fixed.
